Lit. Comp. 1: Do questions 1-16 of Act III
Readings in American Lit. : Nature Books due 10/25 for 10 points extra credit, due 10/27 Studies in American Lit: Nature Books due 10/25 Readings in Am. Lit.--Read Chief Joseph's short speech, "I Will Fight No More Forever" and do the multiple choice ?s on the handout (no need to do the essay questions at the end). Start reviewing the readings from this unit for our test that will begin on Tuesday. Below, you will find a few of the assignments from the week for those who have been absent.
Readings in Am. Lit.--We are finishing up our Native American unit. There will be a test early next week (Mon. or Tues.). A personal narrative writing assignment will be introduced today. This writing assignment will be due late next week. Finally, a kachina doll mini-project will be introduced today as well. Studies in Am. Lit.--Took a quiz on the ending of The Scarlet Letter today. The SL essay is due next Wednesday, 9/27. All essays must be submitted to Turnitin.com LC1--We are finishing up our unit on the writings of Richard Wright. The essay is due Wednesday, 9/27. Euro. Lit. and Phil.--Seniors will be starting the final exam on Friday, May 19th. This will include the French Unit, a small bit of the Italian. Unit, and a final essay. You will be able to continue the final exam on Tuesday, 5/23, at which time the exam must be uploaded to Turnitin.com. Leading up to the final, we have been studying the thinking and writings of Niccolo Machiavelli. There will be a small section of the exam that asks you to interpret what it means to be Machiavellian. Below, I have attached a Youtube video link as well as the note sheet that accompanies the video on Machiavelli. By now, you should have read "Federigo's Falcon" and "Patient Griselda" by Boccaccio (in your Italian Lit. book). Both of these stories are certainly "Machiavellian." Try to figure out why...
Sports Lit.--Seniors, attached are the final exam materials including the final exam questions (and essay by Steve Rushin that I would like you to use and cite for your final essay). The final exam is due on Turnitin.com by Monday night, 5/22. Honors students--We will be working on the independent reading in-class "essay" on Friday, 5/19. All journals should be uploaded to Turnitin.com. Thank you. Underclassmen--We will be working on The Natural test on Friday, 5/19 and on Monday, 5/22. Euro. Lit.--Today we are working on endings to J.P. Sartre's play No Exit. I am attaching the assignment for the few of you who are absent. We will read these aloud to one another on Monday. Sports Lit.--Start planning and brainstorming ideas for your major project focusing on a notable athlete or coach. There are two handouts that go along with this project (which I am attaching below). Think outside the box if possible. Consider amazing stories, such as the one we saw in class today called "Flash". This is the story of a blind runner from Grafton. Euro. Lit.--Read "Flagman Thiel"--a story by Gerhardt Hauptmann for Thurs. Look at the questions at the end (or in the beginning if you are looking for a few spoilers!).
LC 1--Continue reading To Kill a Mockingbird; try to get to the end of Part 1 (through ch. 11). Also, keep working on the Part 1 study guide. The study guide will be due on Tues. at the latest. Sports Lit.--If you have not done so already, submit your Will McDonough essay to Turnitin.com. These creative pieces or essays are now due! Hockey unit starts Mon. Be ready for some serious checking (of your hwk. that is!--sorry, I couldn't resist...). Possible quiz on "Making of a Goon" essay. Be sure to know Joe Kocur! Euro. Lit. and Phil.--Finish the Grimm brothers story assignment with accompanying bio ?s (see attached below for the bio). I will be collecting this assignment on Monday. Also, re-read "The Erl King" to get an even better picture of this famous Goethe poem. Read "Prometheus" a couple of times, and be prepared to discuss on Monday. We will be watching Faust, another Goethe piece starting on Monday. Nothing like a "deal with the devil" to start off the week!
LC1--We are finishing up our work/writing on Rite of Passage--chapter 7 and the essay should now be done. Please upload both to Turnitin.com. To Kill a Mockingbird (our new novel) was distributed today. Attached below are the assignments that go with chapters 1-2, which are to be read over break. One assignment is a take home quiz. There is a short reading from Reader's Digest that is needed to complete this quiz (I will try to scan this in and make it available here). IF you were not able to get the actual novel before break, the novel is available on Youtube as an audiobook. So no excuses for not getting chs. 1-2 done and the take home quiz. Do vocabulary for chs. 1-2 as well. Have a great vacation.
With all of our days off and delayed openings recently (and in the near future, as it looks right now!), I hope these posts help everyone stay on track, as we have a lot of work to do! Lit. Start your essay for the Rite of Passage test--we do have at least 2 computer lab days next week for you to work on this essay in-class as well. 5. Test on Rite of Passage on Monday, 2/13 (if there is school); the vocabulary section will be on the next day of school after we begin the test, so either Tues. or Wed. ***Attached are a number of these assignments. Sports Lit. 1. Work on the Bleachers essay--due 2/15 2. Work on a complete draft of the Will McDonough contest writing piece--due 2/17. ***See assignments attached. Euro. Lit. and Phil. 1. Read pgs. 115-125 of Nilolai Gogol's, "The Overcoat" for the next day we are in class. This story/novella is online if you do not have your book with you. Read up to the line, "walked out annihilated." 2. Honors students should be reading and gathering information for the independent reading assignment on One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. This assignment can be turned in before vacation, 2/17 or is due at the latest on 2/28, when we return from vacation (if you want it hanging over your head that long!).

Submit your favorite athlete presentations to Turnitin if you have not done so already. Euro. Lit.--Finish your version of a "My Country" poem for Friday. Please upload your final masterpieces to Turnitin. Start reading "A Desperate Character" by Turgenev. You should finish this long, short story by Monday. Studies in Euro. Lit.--Attached are the Romanticism, Realism, and Naturalism notes if you need them now or later. Refer to reading list for upcoming readings. Poem in the style of Lermontov due Friday, 2/3. Lit. Studies in American Lit.-- We have just begun our journey with Huck and Jim on the Mississippi, as we will be reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in the weeks ahead. The reading schedule is attached. Readings in American Lit.--Gothic stories are due Friday, November 18th. We are also reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in this class as well. Reading assignments will be announced in class on a daily basis. Studies in European Lit.--We are finishing our German Lit. tests today. Students should be researching our new "isms" when finished for small group discussions tomorrow. Take notes on determinism, existentialism, and nihilism on the note sheets provided. Attached is a reading list for our upcoming French unit. We are starting with The Stranger. Reading questions are also attached for the novel.
Studies in American Lit.--Students should be working on a Nature Book project due on 11/4 (last day of the 1st qtr). The assignment is attached. This is a test grade and is a substantial part of the 1st quarter grade. Readings in American Lit.--Students should be finishing up a Theme Poster assignment, which they started in class today. This assignment will help students a great deal in writing about The Crucible. The theme poster assignment is posted below. Our test on The Crucible starts tomorrow, Thursday, 10/27. The test will likely continue through Friday. Studies in Euro. Lit.--Students should be working on their own Metamorphosis story, as we have now finished the novella. This assignment, along with a rubric, are attached below. The story is due on 11/4 (the last day of the qtr.)
Sorry for the delay in posts! Clearly, these posts are not part of the daily routine yet...they will be! Studies in Am. Lit.--Scarlet Letter essays are due Monday, 10/3. As you have had substantial class time to work on these, hopefully you are well on your way to a final draft! Readings in Am. Lit.--We have just finished our Native American Lit. unit. Some of you still need to turn in your Kachina Doll, which counts toward your test grade. If your Kachina is not done by next Wed., you must stay afterschool to work on it. We just began The Crucible today. Tonight you only/must read pages 3-6, which help to set the opening scene. We will start the play together tomorrow in class. Attached are the questions for Act 1, which again, we will start answering in class on Friday. European Lit.--Finish Russian Lit. tests. Turn in your completed test to Turnitin.com. Tomorrow in class, we will start German Lit. by exploring the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Willhelm, and their collected stories. Assignment is attached below. Have a great weekend!
